Re: sooooo....
Fri, July 28, 2006 - 12:57 AMWhen I went to vancouver, i consulted this:
www.sushi.infogate.de/
I tried yoshi and tojo's. tojo's is way overrated, and yoshi wasn't quite top 10 in my book...
Have you tried sushi ko in larkspur? I think one of the top in the Bay Area. Make sure to eat at the bar, not table.
And have either yasu or tai as your chef, ask for recommendations. There's a new chef there, I don't know how good he is... If you have any question, PM me -

Re: sooooo....
Sat, July 29, 2006 - 8:05 PMi've never been to vancouver, but i'm thinking i might end up there accidentally one day. i'd heard much about tojo's as well, disappointing to hear differently. did you do omakase or did you order specifics at both places (yoshi and tojo's)?

Re: sooooo....
Sat, July 29, 2006 - 11:23 PMI did omakase at tojo's, at the bar. apparently it's only omakase at the bar. dinner for 2 w/o drinks is $308 CAD (before tax/tip). I dind't ilke it because the food wasn't all that for the price, and Tojo himself is very arrogant. Takes away a lot of the dining experience. -

Re: sooooo....
Sun, July 30, 2006 - 5:29 AMDepends on the type of arrogance, usually sushi chef attitude amuses me. When Dan took me to Hamako, I LOVED it just because of the fact that the sushi chef was a total asshole. Dan should remember this experience, too. He hates going there, and I've only had the opportunity to go there once. -

Re: sooooo....
Sun, July 30, 2006 - 5:09 PMI can appreciate the lecture I was given by Ted (Tetsuo) at Hamako to some extent, but I personally wasn't impressed by the food. We even sat at the bar first and only time there (normally not allowed, but I mentioned to the parents that I know their son and am a former coworker), and while we didn't get upgraded treatment, we had a decent chat.
For the amount spent at Hamako, I could eat way better at Ino Sushi, Sakae and with the current perspective, even Anzu. -

Re: sooooo....
Sun, July 30, 2006 - 5:52 PMDan and I had a decent meal when we went there, and at first he wasn't going to let us sit at the bar either, but we just stood there and waited and he eventually let us in. Not sure how much of an "upgrade" we got, but when he saw me eat (as most sushi chefs notice) he got a lot happier and brought out some good stuff.
This was a while ago, however, something like almost two years ago (Dan, have we known each other that long? I think longer than that). For the overall price, I will agree that Ino is a lot more convenient, I still vote that Ino has the best ankimo I've gotten so far.
It's been too long since I've had a sushi meal, and I most likely won't be able to go to Anzu before the sushi chef there moves out to Vegas. (I'm never good with their names) Sad times.

Re: sooooo....
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 8:41 AMHe's really passive agressive. I've been there 3 times, each time he basically was freaking out at the beginning ("NOONE CAN SIT AT THE COUNTER") and then by the end of the meal, begging me to stay and drink with him. Also, he doesn't know what he's talking about w/r/t fugu (ask Daria about this). -
-
Re: sooooo....
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 11:04 PMI don't remember the fugu talk much, I just remember some very very sweet uni. I also remember him hesitating about the fact that I was Korean, but that tends to happen quite often in sushi bars for me. Most sushi chefs automatically assume that I'm Japanese with no Japanese language skills, being Korean is a step down but Koreans are still big sushi enthusiasts so not as bad as the dreaded white men. In the end it all boils down to the fact that I eat a bucketload or five.

Re: sooooo....
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 8:44 AMThere's a thread on Vancouver in the archives where I give Tojo's a very sub-standard review.
Ajisai was the best I had in Vancouver, although Miko was very good (they had basashi). -

Re: sooooo....
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 6:48 PMDo you have the link for Tojo's?
Also I've been to Miko's on Robson for lunch. it was soso, although it had to be a quick lunch and ate at a table, not the bar. -

Re: sooooo....
Mon, July 31, 2006 - 7:17 PMYeah when I went to Miko, I wasn't impressed and then the main chef started throwing basashi (raw neck meat from horse) and other goodies not on the menu.
Here's the No Cheap Sushi - Vancouver thread:

Sat, July 29, 2006 - 8:06 PMyeah, dan. where you goin'?
i post a lot on chowhound. someone actually recognized me at a sushi bar because of those posts.
it was probably the excessive alcohol consumption and loud, really bad japanese that gave me away. -

Re: sooooo....
Wed, August 2, 2006 - 6:21 PMUnfortunately the state of my wallet has not allowed me to eat sushi in some time, as in the last couple of weeks. I went to Uzen a couple of times because it was East Bay and it was alright. I've been eating a lot of ramen lately. Ryowa in Berkeley is alright but I've had better down in L.A.
My most interesting meal this year was spotting Dan's lesbian coworkers making out at Anzu, while discussing my friend's women problems.
You guys seriously need to get your ass to Kiriko next time you're in L.A. I miss Urasawa so. I was there in May and I won't be there for another 2 years. *sad*

Add rice to your ramen, it stretches it out.

Re: sooooo....
Wed, August 9, 2006 - 7:40 PMokay, nevermind chowhound. their policy of arbitrary deletion without stated reasons got annoying, so i'm gonna stop posting there.
in a fit of frustration i even deleted all the posts i made since the new site was unveiled.
yes, the maturity of that act is a bit questionable, but it was quite satisfying and really what did they expect? my problems with authority are glaringly evident even to the vision impaired. -

Hi umetaro, you've been sent the following by a Chowhound moderator:
Blanking out all your posts is a pretty big effort, and leaves the replies looking nonsensical. May we ask what inspired this?

It actually wasn't much of an effort thanks to the new search function. As to what inspired it, that would be the seemingly arbitrary nature of post deletions in recent weeks.
I understand that with the new site's increased traffic and the limited moderator resources available, the quality of moderation will invariably decrease. What is glaringly unacceptable to me though, is the current moderator's newfound penchant for blowing away informative posts in instances where a "please keep this thread on-topic" message from "The Chowhound Team" would have been more than sufficient.
All in all, I'm a bit puzzled as to why a site driven by user content would adopt a policy that is alienating its user base. "It's nothing personal" and "even I get deleted" are little comfort when you can detect no common theme or criteria used for post deletions. I know more than a few people that have become disenchanted with the site's unwritten policies and have moved on to "greener pastures." The content they could have contributed is considerable and its loss lamentable.
In any case, like you say "it's nothing personal." I wish you much success in the future. -

Re: now my account is locked.
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 5:50 PMSo now that they locked my account, I take back that "nothing personal." part.
I quote a friend of mine:
"cnet inevitably fucks up all their properties. i see no reason why they wouldn't do the same here."

Fri, July 28, 2006 - 11:16 PMalt.food.sushi newsgroup is a nice one though lots of noob kinda posts. When it gets technical it is great reading.
